7th September 2019

Thank you to all those who stepped in and organised things while I was away. It was a busy time with our RYLA promotional event and Brian McMath coming to speak about 3D printers. We also met Kieran Trainor, our 2020 exchange student. I am now just about over the jet lag and looking to moving forward with our programme for the year.

Rotary Exchange - Kieran Trainor
We welcomed Kieran Trainor to the meeting this week. We are sponsoring Kieran into the Rotary Youth Exchange programme for 2020.
Kieran came with his mother Niki to meet us and our own Swee Han Lim who will be his New Zealand councellor for the year. Kieran will be spending the year in Denmark, living with local families, and attending the local high school.
Kieran currently goes to Pakuranga College and is very excited about the up coming year. He sees it as an opportunity to grow as a person and also to experience another culture.
Kieren will be sending us reports on his progress while he is away.

RYLA Breakfast
The RYLA Breakfast to promote the Rotary programme was held on August 20th. The event was well attended with seven local firms sending along human resources staff involved in the recruitment or training of young employees to hear about the course.
Our five attendees came from Fisher and Paykel Healthcare and Air New Zealand. All gave excellent accounts of what the course meant to them. Peter Ross, The District chair for RYLA , gave more details on the wider aspects of the course and the running of a major training event.
Swee Han Lim also gave a presentation on Rotary and what we do in the local community

Last week's speaker - Brian Mc Math
Brian McMath talked about 3D printers and in Schools program, and the 3 Trusts – page 16 of the presentation attached below.  During his presentation, he gave many interesting samples of products produced by the 3D printer that we had a chance to hold and play with (toys and a tiny working spanner amongst other things).  Brian said Weta Workshop use this technology widely in their movie productions.  Issue with 3D printers in their current form is they are very time consuming as production is layer by layer, therefore could not do production on a large scale, but they sure have their good uses too.
